Accounts and limits

The Ministry described groups it considered a risk and reported attempted attacks. The CGT characterized the mobilizations as peaceful and said demonstrators had been detained, tear-gassed, obstructed and placed in police custody. These are the Ministry’s and the union’s accounts; the linked records do not independently establish every incident at every location.

The ministry’s next-morning total and the union’s 17:30 tally use different cutoffs, and the linked statements do not provide a shared counting method. They do not establish one exact turnout figure, so this briefing preserves both estimates without choosing between them.

In a report published on 1 November, the Ministry said its count for a separate mobilization on 31 October was 320,000 people across 291 public-space actions, including 70,000 in Paris. This is the Ministry’s estimate for a different day; it does not resolve the 24 October disagreement.
